Tips on Kungfu Sparring

Time is Relative
For the attacker, it seems like a minute between the beginning and end of an attack. However, for the defender, it seems only an instant.
Your Head
When the head goes, the body will follow. So use all the available handles to your benefit, such as ears, hair, piercing, etc. If you lose your head, you lost the fight. If you lost it emotionally, you will lose the fight. If you lose it due to injury, you will lose the fight.

Keep your mouth shut. Thinking about talking means you are not thinking about fighting  Also, it prevents biting your tongue.

Keep your eyes open, even if it means watching the punch hit you.

Watch out for......?
Intention: By observing the opponent's intention you may determine whether the opponent's intends to attack or fake an attack.
Line of Sight: By observing the opponent's line of sight you may determine the opponent's target.
Location of center of body: By observing the location of opponent's center you may determine which foot or hand will be used in an attack and how far the attack will reach. Observing either one of these things will not work. But if you observe all three, you may determine what attack may be coming, what the target may be, and whether the attack is real or a fake.

Watch the eye
Not the face, the eye. If you watch the eye, unless the opponent is  a fantastic actor, you will have a window into the his or her thoughts and feelings. No matter how  the opponent may act otherwise, if he or she is in pain, concerned, confident, and worried, etc., it will be reflected on his or her eye. If you just watch the opponent's face, you may get mesmerized by the person's expression; some people can instill fear by their stage.

Quality rather than quantity
Though we don't believe in belt system, consider it in terms or seniority. One difference between a lower belt fighter and a black belt fighter is the number of techniques executed. This is one reason many fighters run out of energy, they execute too many ineffective techniques, especially energy sapping kicks. It is not how many kicks or punches you thrown, it is how well each technique is thrown and whether it was thrown to an unguarded target. After a color belt spars a black belt, the color belt is exhausted and has a low score despite having thrown a hundred techniques. The black belt is fresh and has a high score. Why? The black belt only threw techniques that has a chance of scoring.

It is the quality, not the quantity, of the attacks that count. You win by points, not by the number of techniques. Manage your energy. Do not burn out early doing energy sapping jump kicks.

Good fighter's Qualities:
Good fighters are able to:
Read opponent's thought of action.
Anticipate movements of the opponent.
Deceive opponent or conceal own intentions.
Mislead opponent (feints or jab).
Stay focused to the moment.
